Spider control that goes after the cause

Most spiders in Vallejo homes are harmless, and some do you a favor by eating other insects. The one we take seriously is the western black widow, and it is common here. They love the dry, cluttered, undisturbed places most Vallejo homes have: garages, sheds, woodpiles, crawl spaces, meter boxes and under patio furniture.

Spraying a spider you can see does very little. A good spider exterminator removes webs and egg sacs, treats the cracks and corners where spiders hide, and deals with the other insects spiders are feeding on. That last part is the one most people skip, and it is why spiders keep coming back.

Call (707) 000-0000 and tell us where you are seeing spiders.

Black widows in Vallejo

Black widows are active all year in Vallejo’s mild climate and most noticeable in summer and fall. They build low, irregular webs in quiet places and usually hang upside down in the web at night. The egg sacs are round, papery and tan, about the size of a pea, and each one can hold a few hundred eggs.

Places we find them most often in Vallejo homes:

  • Garage corners, shelving and the gap under the garage door
  • Woodpiles, stacked lumber and storage boxes
  • Under outdoor furniture, barbecues and play sets
  • Water meter and irrigation boxes
  • Crawl spaces and foundation vents
  • Sheds and the undersides of planters

Homes in Hiddenbrooke, North Vallejo and Glen Cove that back onto dry hills see plenty of them, and so do older homes downtown and on Mare Island with detached garages and sheds.

If you are bitten by a black widow: wash the bite, put a cold pack on it and get medical advice. California Poison Control is at 1-800-222-1222. Call 911 for severe pain spreading through the body, muscle cramps, sweating or trouble breathing, and seek care right away for young children and older adults.

What about brown recluse spiders?

People in Vallejo often ask about brown recluse spiders. Brown recluse spiders are not established in California, according to the University of California’s Integrated Pest Management program. The spiders mistaken for them here are usually harmless brown house spiders or wolf spiders. If you think you have one, catch it in a jar and let us look at it.

How our spider control works

  1. Inspection. We check the garage, eaves, windows, crawl space, yard and storage areas, find where spiders are hiding and look for egg sacs, especially black widow sacs.
  2. Web and egg sac removal. We sweep away webs and egg sacs in the areas we treat. Removing egg sacs prevents the next generation.
  3. Targeted crack and crevice treatment. We treat the corners, gaps, foundation vents and quiet spaces where spiders hide, inside and out, not every wall in the house.
  4. Perimeter treatment. A targeted treatment around the outside of the home cuts down spiders and the insects they eat.
  5. Cut their food supply. If spiders are feeding on ants, flies, earwigs or other bugs, we point it out and treat that too.
  6. Advice and follow-up. We show you what to clear and seal. Many Vallejo homes go with quarterly service, because spiders and their food sources return with the seasons.

We tell you what products we use, where we use them and how long to keep kids and pets away from treated areas.

How to get rid of spiders around the house

These steps make a big difference on their own and make any treatment last longer.

  • Clean up the garage. Get boxes off the floor and onto shelves, switch to sealed plastic bins and leave space along the walls.
  • Move woodpiles and lumber away from the house and off the ground.
  • Wear gloves when reaching into boxes, woodpiles, meter boxes and garden gear.
  • Shake out shoes, gloves and jackets that have been stored in the garage.
  • Vacuum webs and egg sacs in corners and window frames. Empty the vacuum outside.
  • Seal gaps under doors, around windows and where pipes and cables enter the walls. Add a door sweep to the garage door.
  • Swap white outdoor lights for yellow “bug” bulbs. Bright lights draw insects, and insects draw spiders.
  • Trim plants and vines back from the walls and keep mulch away from the foundation.

Spiders as a sign of other bugs

A lot of spiders usually means a lot of food. If you have many spiders inside, look for what they are eating.

What does spider control cost in Vallejo?

The price depends on the size of the home, how much of the garage, crawl space and yard needs treatment, whether black widows are involved, and whether you want a one-time treatment or ongoing service.

We inspect first and give you a clear price before we start. For general pricing factors, see our Vallejo pest control cost guide.

Spider control in Vallejo: common questions

Are there black widows in Vallejo?

Yes. Western black widows are common in Vallejo and across Solano County. Look for shiny black spiders with a red hourglass in low, messy webs in garages, woodpiles, sheds, crawl spaces and under outdoor furniture.

Are black widows dangerous?

Their venom is serious, but bites are uncommon and deaths are rare. Most bites happen when someone reaches into a hidden spot without looking. If you are bitten, wash the area, apply cold and call Poison Control at 1-800-222-1222, or 911 for severe symptoms.

Do brown recluse spiders live in California?

They are not established in California. Most spiders people think are brown recluses are harmless house spiders or wolf spiders.

Why are there so many spiders in the fall?

In Vallejo, September and October are peak season for orb weavers, which build big webs across paths and porches, and male spiders of many kinds wander looking for mates. Cooler nights also bring some spiders inside.

Do spider sprays work?

Spraying a single spider kills that spider. Lasting spider control comes from removing webs and egg sacs, treating the spots where spiders hide, sealing gaps and cutting down the insects they eat.

Is spider treatment safe for kids and pets?

We tell you which products we plan to use, where we apply them and how long to keep kids and pets away. We focus on cracks, corners and the outside of the home, and we follow every product label.

How often do I need spider control?

One treatment can knock down a problem, but spiders return when food and shelter return. Many Vallejo homeowners choose quarterly service, especially if they have black widows in the garage or yard.
